Multifarious final gathering

Attendees at the final gathering

Multifarious, fondly known as Multy, an LGBT spirituality group, had its final gathering in the Franciscan Friary, Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath, this past weekend.  Its usual fluid structure of theme/Eucharist/meal was again followed for this meeting.

Since early 2006 the group has met monthly at the invitation of the Franciscans as part of  its outreach to people on the margins – one of the few Catholic institutions to have the courage in the current climate in the Church to engage with LGBT people on their own terms, rather than on terms dictated from on high.

The theme for the final meeting simply allowed us to reminisce about the group and what it meant for each person. Several of those there had not attended meetings for quite some time, but wanted to honour its demise.  Many talked about how their spiritual journey was enhanced by their involvement in the group.

Multy filled a gap left by the folding of Reach in 2005, the gay men’s Christian group which had held its meetings in the Redemptorist’s Marianella Centre, Rathgar, Dublin, for over 20 year.  Interestingly, the annual Christmas Carol Service from Reach still continues, though, in the Unitarian Church, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin, organised by some of its former members.  This is always held on the second Saturday in December – 11th this year.  Sadly, I will miss it this year, as I will be singing in concert with the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus that day.

Leftover funds from Multy were donated to the Outwest Helpline and the GCN appeal.

What might come now to replace Multy? I have little doubt there is still a need to gather together for those of us who wish to nurture the spiritual sides of our lives, no matter how strange this might appear to others in the mainstream LGBT community.
